Tombs of Saadian Cherifs<\/div>\n

Located 12 km north-east of Agadir, the Mosque of Timzguida Ougard in the village of Aguerd (30.486199, -9.469668), is surrounded by a cemetery in which you will find the Tombs of Sa\u00e2diens Cherifs, members of their family as well as those of soldiers who died in combat.<\/p>\n

The men and women of the Saadian sheriffs are buried in 2 separate mausoleums. The large number of tombs demonstrates the long occupation of the Saadians in the Land of Messguina (from the beginning to the middle of the 16th century).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Strategic passage<\/div>\n

The ensemble houses a Koranic School and a Mosque dating from the Almoravid Dynasty (1060-1147). The Mosque of Timzguida Ougard was built when the Almoravids ensured the safety of Saharan caravans passing through the strategic passage of the Messguina Gorges.<\/p>\n

The Saadians who will succeed them will keep the mosque and the Koranic school intact while bringing their architectural touch. The school has become a center of learning and theology. It houses a boarding school which, until today, allows future imams to settle there and train. The large room which serves as a prayer and study room is ventilated by a large opening to the sky.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Historians affirm that it is in the fort known as Aguelgal in Aguerd that Cheikh Mohamed Essaadi, main founder of the Saadian dynasty resided from 1540 to 1554. This fort served as a starting point for attacks against the Portuguese fortress known as Santa Cruz do Cabo de Aguer (Cap Ghir).<\/div>\n
