The Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve – What is it?<\/h3>\n

Argania Spinosa<\/div>\n
The Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve (RBA) is the first biosphere reserve created in Morocco. This biosphere reserve is based on the presence of a forest species endemic to Morocco, namely the Argan tree – Argania spinosa.<\/div>\n
The argan-based forest formations are mainly located in the region of southwestern Morocco (between the Western High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas) and are classified as a World Biosphere Reserve because of their role as a “bulwark” against desertification.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

On December 8, 1998, the Arganeraie was declared by UNESCO as Morocco’s first Biosphere Reserve covering an area of approximately 2.5 million hectares. It covers the provinces and prefectures of Agadir Ida Outanane, Inzeguane A\u00eft Melloul, Chtouka A\u00eft Baha, Taroudant, Tiznit and Essaouira. With 830,000 hectares and 21 million trees, the argan tree constitutes the second largest Moroccan forest resource after the holm oak.<\/p>\n

The largest populations cover the southern slopes of the High Atlas and the northern slopes of the Anti-Atlas, that is to say a large part of the Souss basin, over a continental depth that can reach one hundred kilometers, and over altitudes ranging up to 1,500 meters.<\/p>\n
