The Honey Tradition – Apiary of Inzerki<\/h3>\n

The Apiary of Inzerki (30.797869, -9.192405) is considered the largest traditional apiary in the world, and arguably the oldest. It is a real traditional treasure of Souss Massa. The apiary was restored in 2005 respecting tradition (earth, stone and wood) even if out of the hundreds of boxes that make it up, it now houses very few active hives.<\/p>\n

This area produces honey considered to be one of the best in Morocco and the sale of the products by the cooperative is very often the only source of income for families.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

The swarm is placed in a cylindrical hive made of bark or braided reed. The ends of the cylinder are plugged with a palm disc identified by each owner. A small hole is made for the entry and exit of insects. Each hive is placed in ventilated huts.<\/p>\n

The Apiary of Inzerki has many advantages: it is located at an altitude of around 1000 meters, on a sunny southern slope. The climate is relatively stable and there is an abundance of plants and flowers: almond trees, palm trees, mountain flowers, thyme, lavender, and argan trees.<\/p>\n

How to get there:<\/em><\/p>\n

From Agadir, take the N8 towards Marrakech and turn left at point (30.711664, -9.216734) to take the P1001. Then, turn right at point (30.745704, -9.319580) to reach the Rucher. Allow 1 hour and 50 minutes to get to Inzerki. There is a shorter path continuing on the national road then the path that passes under the motorway in Argana (30.792361, -9.143434).<\/p>\n

Whatever the choice, the route is a succession of landscapes: villages and impressive relief. On arrival, park your vehicle below the road.<\/p>\n

Good plan: The Honey Festival in Imouzzer (1h40mn from Inzerki) takes place in summer – early July.<\/p>\n
