The majestic Kasbah Agadir Oufella – in the heart of Agadir
Journey from Agadir Center: 15 mins
In the center of Agadir, you will find one of the most historical places of Agadir: Agadir Oufella – “Granary on high” and its impressive view on the Bay of Agadir. Built in 1540 by Mohamed Ech-Cheikh, a monarch of the Saadian dynasty, this fortress which overlooks the city of Agadir was intended to protect itself from attacks by Portuguese settlers.
The earthquake of 1960 destroyed this citadel, leaving behind ruins. The ramparts have been rehabilitated and the interior of the fortress knew a major restoration work.
The access door to the citadel is authentic and bears the inscription in Dutch “Fear God and respect the king”, a reminder that the Netherlands had an settlement there in 1746.
