Immerse yourself in the magic of Taroudant
Journey from Agadir: 1 hour 25 mins / 85 km
In the middle of its walls, Taroudant knew how to preserve all its charm and its history. The city offers two souks with an energy and an activity specific to the inhabitants. The Medina and the tour of the Taroudant walls are privileged places for walking and relaxing.
With the little-visited Western High Atlas, the Anti Atlas and the nearby coastline, the city is a good point of influence for a stay in the Souss Massa (hiking, discovery of collective granaries and other outings).
- The ramparts of Taroudant (7.5 km long):
are the tourist asset of the city and confirm the nickname of the city “Little Marrakech”. The best time to go around the walls (by horse-drawn carriage, bicycle or on foot) is the end of the day to enjoy the sunset over the ochre color of the ramparts. Close to the ramparts, the Bab Targhount Tannery (30.468749, -8.889632), processes and works the skins of sheep, goats and camels. About forty tanners work in front of you. Some shops offer products such as leather bags, stools or sandals.
- The Souks of Taroudant:
In the Medina of Taroudant, the activity is mainly concentrated around Assarag (30.469444, -8.882591) and Talmeklat Places (30.468193, -8.879960). We can discover two permanent popular markets (souks) which are unique experiences and a weekly souk outside the city:
1 – The Artisanal Souk (30.469040, -8.880240) is held between Assarag and Talmeklat, in a labyrinth of covered alleys, where artisans work in their shops and offer crafts: tanners, potters, jewelers, copper work, wrought iron, rugs. There is also the jewelers’ souk (gold or silver).
2 – The Traditional Souk is the most frequented market. It is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., you will find all the consumer products there. It is accessed from Talmeklat Square (30.468193, -8.879960). There is great activity in the central alley where there is a jumble of bazaars, drugstores, clothing stores.
3 – The Sunday Souk is held on Sunday morning outside the ramparts of Taroudant (Road heading north towards Tamaloukt = 30.484948, -8.875254). There you will find products from mountainous regions, livestock, herbs and plants, second-hand goods, mountains of fruits and vegetables, spices, second-hand clothes.
The cafes-restaurants arranged under tents allow you to eat in the heart of the souk. By small taxi, it will cost 8 dirhams for a trip for 3 people or a carriage 20 to 25 dirhams for a trip for 4 people.
