Dream roadtrip in Souss Massa
Trip from Agadir: 5 H30
After our night in the Medina in Taroudant , we head due east to discover the Iriqui National Park . It is in this park that we have reserved a bivouac which will allow us to spend our first night in the desert. This morning, we embarked on a very early departure from Taroudant for the Oasis of Foum Zguid (3 hours 50 mins drive: 30.084951, -6.877034).
We had lunch there and left the pavement for a trail (30.060216, -6.869288) running along the Jbel Madouer (both the large and small) to reach the dry lake of Iriqui which is located between Foum Zguid and M’hamid.
This lake is most often dry but can be covered with a few cm of water in winter. It resembles a real movie set because the lake looks like a huge expanse in a grandiose landscape. We stop at nightfall in the middle of the Park near the village of Zaouiat Sidi Abdenbi (with about thirty families).
A bivouac that we had reserved awaits us and takes us away to an area of the dunes where the sunset is a delectable moment. The candlelight dinner ends up enchanting us, we go to sleep, the day was busy.
We realize that the night can be very cold or even freezing but we wouldn’t trade our place for the world. When we wake up, we are in absolute calm and we have breakfast while feasting on the sunrise above the dunes. We leave for the dunes of Chegaga where we decide to have lunch in a bivouac.
After lunch, we tackle the ascent of large dunes on foot then depart for M’Hamid el Ghizlane on a very sandy trail between dunes planted with sand-blown Tamarisk. We finally find a paved road at M’Hamid, it’s a beautiful scene!
