Road trip in Morocco - the Oasis route - Explore Agadir Souss Massa

From Agadir, head in the direction of Taroudant, then take the P1706 to Aoulouz. Take the N10 back to Taliouine where you will have to stop and discover the traditional culture of saffron, the Red Gold of Souss Massa. The Taliouine Kasbah can be admired from the adjoining guest house. When you have passed Taliouine, turn right (30.471271, -7.842794) and continue on the P1743 road to Akka Ighane (via Agadir Melloul). The road takes you through the Anti-Atlas. The landscapes are breathtaking and the colors of the rock layers are stunning. You can see some nomadic tents with their herds. At Akka Ighane, head north to discover the Oasis of Aguinane, one of the most beautiful in Morocco. The place really deserves to spend the night there (30.206741, -7.561984). The fortified village of Adkhs: 30.124472, -7.464598 offers you a magical point of view. Photographers take note.

From Aguinane, return to Akka Ighane via the same road, then continue on the P1743 road to join the N12 20km further ahead. There is the possibility to visit the magnificent fortified villages of Tissekmoudine (29.963018, -7.551340) and Agadir Aserghine (29.948410, -7.565535). Do not hesitate to visit them and feel what life could be like in these adobe villages with their covered and narrow corridors. After these visits, at the intersection with the N12, turn right to stop in the oasis of Tata. In Tata, you have the opportunity to visit its immense palm grove on foot. The Oases around Tata (Agadir Lehna, Tighremt, Agoujgal, Indfiane, Taourirt, Sounh, etc.) and their small agricultural plots are located on the edges of carefully irrigated wadis. Each oasis demonstrates its ingenuity for the distribution of the water coming from the limited rainfall of the Anti Atlas. The springs, the Khettaras (ancestral system of underground canals collecting water from this aquifer) and the wells provide the oasis with both drinking and irrigation water. Southeast of Tata, the Mellah de Tazart (29.663928, -7.939902), described by Charles de Foucauld, is impressive. Do not hesitate to access it and walk around it as the view is sumptuous despite the state of conservation. For lovers of hiking, there is also the possibility of strolling in the gorges of Agouliz (29.739722, -8.190093), its immense cliffs and its oasis. The site is breathtaking. Nearby, you have the equally impressive Aygou gorges. The Caves of Messalites can be a great bike trip to combine with a visit to Agadir Lehna.

From Tata, take the N12 road towards Akka. Before arriving at Akka you have Oum El Aleg (29.332743, -8.185968) and its rock carvings. Ask someone to show you the direction. When you arrive at the Akka Oasis, take an immediate right to visit the village of Agadir Ouzrou or Owzro (29.419414, -8.247846), a fortified village built on a cliff, renovated and partially inhabited. Following this same road for 7 km, you arrive at a small crossroads where you will turn left to admire the square-shaped Minaret of the old mosque “Lalla Baytou Allah” of the Kasbah of Agadir Amghar (29.435706, -8.267209 ). Do not hesitate to stroll in the Akka palm grove which seems to be a mirage compared to the little water available. Palm trees are everywhere. The gardens surround the houses and are built to protect the inhabitants from the heat. After visiting Akka, head in the direction of Icht via the N12. Then turn right on the R102 (29.032138, -8.841995) and then turn right again on the R107 (29.133032, -8.965413) to climb up towards Tafraoute (one of the most beautiful roads in Morocco). On the R107, you have the possibility of crossing the very beautiful gorges of Ait Mansour , a mountain oasis, by turning right at point (29.499505, -9.011375) then left at point (29.497852, -8.822118) to finally stop in Tafraoute .

Departing from Tafraoute, head northwest for the Oasis of Targua N’touchka. Take a left at point (29.752423, -8.965127) then continue straight on at point (29.739475, -9.146562). Follow in the direction of Tanalt, Targua n’touchka then Ait Baha . To get back to Agadir more quickly, you can take the R105 from Tafraoute which will take you to the magnificent Kasbah of Tizourgane (29.886953, -9.001984) and some fortified granaries including Imchguiguiln (30.094359, -9.164338), Ikounka (30.113939, -9.200916), Innoumar (30.163250, -9.108944) and Ait Alla (30.148350, -9.179983).
