FORTIFIED GRANARIES & KSOUR

A 5-day tour for those who are passionate about heritage architecture. This visit of the fortified granaries and Kasbahs (fortified villages) is a real journey through time and a true lesson in the architecture of the collective good. Photographers take note of extraordinary views over the villages and valleys. During your tour, you will need to keep your head on a swivel and look closely because the region is home to dozens of granaries, few of which are restored today.

From Agadir, take the N1 road (southbound) to reach Tiznit. When you reach Tiznit, you will enter the Medina through the “Bab Oulad Jerrar” gate (29.692703, -9.725123). Turn left on Rue de l’Hôpital (29.695564, -9.727816) to park at Place du Mechouar, in the center of the Souk. The city is particularly lively on Thursday (souk day). You will find the Jewelers Souk (29.696626, -9.731780) on your left. On the other side of Place du Mechouar, heading northeast, you will visit the historic Tiznit where the Blue Source (29.700492, -9.726840) is located next to the Kasbah Aghanaj (1820) and the Grand Mosque (29.699504, -9.726035), with its minaret bristling with poles. Go around the ramparts by Bab Targua (North gate) and come back by Bab el Khémis (more to the left). Here you will have a nice view from the ramparts.

From Tiznit, take route 104 via Kerdous pass, then turn right (29.540742, -9.305225) southbound via road P1919, then turn left (29.220997, -9.490619) via road P1317 for Souk Aday, then turn on the left (29.148611, -9.299541) by the P1315 for the village of Amtoudi. Visit of the 2 magnificently restored collective granaries Id Aissa (29.246391, -9.185329) and Aguelouy (29.240086, -9.172743) and the Amtoudi gorges (29.236985, -9.166225). You can sleep there or at Icht (29.059198, -8.853393) which you will reach by the R102.

Before leaving Amtoudi or Icht, you have the option of seeing rock engravings in the Tamanart valley (several dozen sites are present) or going to see the typical village of Tadakoust (29.261475, -8.693831). Then take Route 102, and turn left (29.133074, -8.965442) by P107 for Igmir-Izerbi – Tarsouate – Tafraoute. This road – surely one of the most beautiful roads in Morocco, is the equivalent, in the Souss Massa, of the famous winding road of the Dades Gorges. Taking this route is already an activity in itself. Photographers take note! Once you arrive in Tafraoute , do not hesitate to visit the traditional houses in Tazka (29.710193, -8.986881) or Oumesnate (29.764761, -8.943504) and to walk in the Valley of Ammeln.

From Tafraoute, take route 105 then Route 106 at point (29.742316, -8.831720), continue by road P1723 at point (29.875094, -8.722383) to visit Agadir Tasguent (1h15min from Tafraout = 29.913932, -8.745364). Continue on the P1723, where you will find another Agadir Touflaazt granary (visible from the road) at point: 30.065936, -8.825737. It is accessible on foot at 150m. Still continuing on the P1723, you will find another Agadir Iguer N’ghar granary (visible from the road) at point: 30.167224, -8.928098. It is accessible via the trail starting at point: 30.160661, -8.934696. Come back to Tafraout on the same road. If you have time, you can make a loop through the Gorges of Ait Mansour and Tizerkine and see the Zaouia and Mosque of Timguidcht : 29.545152, -8.786724.
